Pakistan Press Foundation

On June 10, three suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Nasurllah Gadani, Sindh Senior Minister for Information Sharjeel Inam Memon announced at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club.

Gadani, a Sindhi-language daily Awami Awaz correspondent, was known for his critical reporting. He was fatally shot by armed assailants near his hometown Mirpur Mathelo on May 21 and succumbed to his injuries on May 24 in a Karachi hospital.

The Sindh Police arrested a key suspect on June 6, with further arrests following in the days after. Memon expressed his sorrow over Gadani’s death, attributing it to a mindset aimed at suppressing press freedom. He assured the media that the government was committed to combating this mindset and would inform them about the case’s progress.

In line with Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah’s directives, the Sindh government has provided Rs10 million to Gadani’s heirs as financial assistance. Memon acknowledged that no amount of money could compensate for the loss of a loved one but hoped the assistance would support Gadani’s family.

Memon also expressed hope for the swift apprehension of those responsible for the murder of Jan Muhammad Mahar, a journalist for Sindhi-language KTN News and Daily Kawish. Mahar was shot dead by unknown assailants who fired at his car near St. Saviour School on Queens Road in Sukkur on the night of August 13-14. The main suspect, Shero Mahar, remains at large, but several of his associates named in the FIR have been arrested or detained.

Furthermore, Memon highlighted that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally visited the house of Jan Muhammad Mahar, demonstrating the party’s commitment to supporting journalists and their families. He also emphasized that the Sindh Police had made significant progress in the case and were determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
