Bahria Town Rejects “Fake List” of Paid Journalists; Threatens Legal Action

Pakistan Press Foundation

On June 1, the administration of Bahria Town, a housing society, denied allegations of paying journalists after a purported “fake list” surfaced on social media. The list, claiming to name journalists compensated by the company, has been denounced as fraudulent, with Bahria Town emphasizing the use of a fabricated letterhead.

The company stated on X, formerly Twitter:  “A fake list is circulating on social media, falsely alleging that journalists were paid by Bahria Town. The letterhead used in this list is also fraudulent. Bahria Town intends to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading this misinformation.”

Several journalists named in the list, including Asma Shirazi and Hamid Mir, have spoken out against its legitimacy. Shirazi noted that similar false lists emerge annually to “defame” journalists and pointed to a previous incident where she, along with other journalists, had successfully challenged a similar list in the Supreme Court.

In a social media post, Mir reiterated his history of criticizing Malik Riaz, owner of Bahria Town, even when the property tycoon allegedly had support from political parties and intelligence agencies.
