On May 15, Daily Khabrain and Such News reporter Mehr Ashfaq Siyal was critically shot by unidentified individuals near the Thermal Bypass in Muzaffargarh city in the Punjab province. Siyal was severely injured and shifted to a DHQ Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.

According to The News, gunmen had intercepted the journalist and shot him in the heart after identifying him.

Police are currently investigating the murder and if the motives behind it were personal. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice of the murder and asked the provincial inspector general of police for a report.

Local police officials told PPF that Siyal was going to his work in the morning when the bikers stopped, confirmed his identity, and fired on him. Ashfaq was shifted to DHQ Hospital in serious condition.

They said that police had tried to record his statement, and he also tried to speak but was unable to tell them due to his condition, and they were unable to understand what he was saying. They said a joint investigation team has been set up.

On May 20, the Punjab In-Charge of Outstation Reporters for Such TV, Mahr Hameed, told PPF that police were investigating the case.

In a statement, the Multan Union of Journalists (MUJ) expressed their condolences to Siyal’s family and said that the suspects should immediately be arrested and his family be provided justice.

The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) also issued a statement urging the Punjab chief minister, inspector general of police, and local administration to “immediately” arrest the killers and unveil the motives behind the murder.
