Journalist Nasrullah Gadani Dies Following Targeted Attack; Widespread Protests Erupt Across Sindh
Journalist Nasrullah Gadani, who was critically injured in a targeted attack in Mirpur Mathelo in an armed attack on May 21, succumbed to his injuries and passed away on May 24 at a private hospital in Karachi. Gadani, 40, had been associated with the Sindhi language daily Awami Awaz and was known for his critical reporting.
The tragic incident occurred when Gadani was shot by armed assailants while riding his motorcycle. Initially treated at a local hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, he was later airlifted to Karachi for advanced care. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Gadani’s injuries proved fatal, and his death has sparked widespread mourning and protests across Sindh.
As his body was transported back to his hometown, residents from various communities along the route paid their respects by showering the ambulance with rose petals. The slain journalist was laid to rest in his native village, Qabool Gadani, amidst a large gathering of mourners, including journalists, activists, and political figures.
In response to his death, the journalist community in Karachi staged a walkout during a Sindh Assembly session on May 24, demanding the arrest of those responsible for Gadani’s and other journalists’ recent killings.
The Home Minister of Sindh, Zia Lanjar, and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon met with protesters, assuring them of the government’s commitment to bringing the culprits to justice. Three suspects have been detained in connection with the murder, with officials expecting a breakthrough soon.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the attack, emphasizing the perilous conditions under which journalists operate in Pakistan. They have demanded immediate action to arrest the killers and provide compensation to Gadani’s family.
Prominent political and social leaders, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, Sindh United Party, Sindh Taraqi-pasand Party chairman Dr. Qadir Magsi, Jeay Sindh Mahaz (R) chairman Riaz Ali Chandio, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (B) chairman Sanan Qureshi, and the Sindhi Association of North America (SANA), paid rich tributes to Gadani. They described his murder as an attack on Sindh’s conscience and demanded the immediate arrest of his killers.
Gadani is survived by his widow, four sons, two daughters, and his mother. His family and colleagues remember him as a courageous voice for the oppressed and a staunch advocate for journalistic integrity and freedom of expression.
The Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners (CJMP) has strongly criticized the initial investigation team’s approach and has instructed the inspector general of police to form a new, more effective team. This move underscores the urgent need for a credible and focused inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Gadani’s killing, aiming to prevent future attacks on journalists. The commission’s demand highlights the critical importance of justice and accountability in safeguarding press freedom in Pakistan.
