MUZAFFARGARH: The National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) has opened hundreds of schools for women in this district and 50,000 women aged between 15 to 45 years are being imparted basic education in these schools.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a literacy centre in Shahjamal on Thursday, NCHD district general manager Khair Muhammad said the commission had been running 500 centres since 2003. He said the programme was started for those people who could not attend schools during their early ages.

Naseem Mai, of Shajamal, told Dawn that she missed schooling because of family problems and her early marriage. She said she wanted to become a nurse. When she learnt about the NCHD literacy centre in her village, she took admission and started getting education.

Hundreds of people attended the opening ceremony and thanked DCO Mahmood Aslam Wazir and the NCHD officials for their efforts to promote literacy.
