KARACHI: Noted scholar and former federal minister for religious affairs Aamir Liaquat Hussain criticised the new government for not forcefully raising its voice against blasphemy.
He was addressing the Khadijatul Kubra conference organised by the Pakistan Federation of Business and Professional Women Organisation at a local hotel here on Monday. He said that in the first session of parliament it was shameful that the ancestor of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani found time to pay tributes to the sacrifice of Mohtarma Bhutto, the ‘judicial murder’ of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and ordered the release of incarcerated judges but had nothing to say about the insults to Islam and its Prophet (PBUH). He lamented the fact that the politicians, including religious leaders, forgot to say anything to defend the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in their hunger for acquiring power. Newly elected member of parliament, Khushbakht Shujaat paid tributes to the towering personality of Hazrat Khadija (RA) pointing out her example that women are not behind men in any field. She asked the women of today to follow her example. She also paid tribute to Begum Salima Ahmed for her 35-year contribution to womenÃs emancipation. On this occasion, women from diverse fields were also given Khadijatul Kubra awards. Among the winners were the first woman Governor State Bank Shamshad Akhtar, noted writer and social worker Saqiba Rahimuddin and well-known journalist Qudsia Qadri. The awards were handed out by Sindh University Vice Chancellor Prof Mazharul Haq Siddiqi, well-known economist Jehangir Siddiqi, and founder of the First Women Bank Akram Khatoon. The event was compered by Mehtab Akbar Rashdi and attended by a large number of notables.
