LAHORE- A web site with a local internet service provider which was a source of information on Afghanistan has been closed down after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Confirming the development, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) said it had not done so under pressure from the government.
An official said shortly after the attacks, some 78,000 people approached the web site as a result of which the entire system was adversely affected.
The ISP was unable to cope with the situation because of its limited capacity to handle the traffic.
To enable the system to go on and to ensure that other people faced no difficulty in having access to the system, the ISP had to close down the site, he said.
The site, the official said, was flooded with traffic from the United States and India. Hackers also vented their anger on the Afghan government by incorporating objectionable things in the information provided by the site.
In such a situation, the official said, it was not possible for his network to allow the web site remain operative any more.
