All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) slams journalist ‘s killing

KARACHI- The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) has expressed its grief and shock over the killing of Shahid Soomro, a correspondent of a Sindhi daily, while resisting attempt to kidnap him Kandhkot.

APNS Secretary-General Kazi Asad Abid, in a statement, said on October 22, 2002 that the APNS had noted with concern that the incident of harassment and threat to life of journalists had become rampant in Sindh, specially in the rural areas. This situation is alarming for the functioning of the press in the country.

Demanding protection for the journalists and arrest of the suspect named in the First Information Report (FIR) for Mr. Soomro’s killing, he said the press freedom was essential for the successful functioning of a democratic society.
