LAHORE- All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) Secretary General Mohammad Aslam Kazi has expressed his concern over the police excesses against the Chief Editor of Monthly Shahrag-e-Pakistan, Lahore.

In a statement issued here on July 15th, 2003, Kazi strongly condemned the police action against the newspaper editor in which he was not only detained for two days and maltreated by the police officials but also took away computers and issues of the magazine.

He said the editor was harassed and threatened of dire consequences if he continued to publish material against the government.

The APNS Secretary General stated that the police action was violation of the press freedom as enshrined in Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The APNS has urged the provincial government to take immediate action in this regard, and initiate an investigation against the police officials for transgressing their legal limit to ensure that the Punjab government is committed to safeguarding the freedom of press in the province.
