On March 2, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved the creation of Punjab’s first cybercrime investigation unit.
In a meeting, the Punjab chief minister directed the relevant authorities to present a detailed micro security plan within the next seven days.
Special protection cell women impacted by cybercrime and district-level anti-cybercrime centres were also approved. Furthermore, Nawaz decreed a ban on movement through non-traditional provincial entry points and enforced strict regulations on drone usage.
Additional security enhancements include installing searchlights along key provincial routes and positioning rooftop security monitoring systems at various checkpoints. Immediate steps will be taken to procure advanced drone defence systems.
The chief minister emphasised the necessity for continuous combing operations against criminals and terrorists and advocated for modern equipment and training for units responsible for crowd management. “The methods of warfare have changed; we must prepare ourselves accordingly,” she stated, underscoring the need for collective effort and vigilance to ensure peace and stability in Punjab.
An official source told Dawn that the CCIU is expected to become operational in a few weeks. Ongoing consultations between the Punjab government and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) will ensure there is no overlap in their functions.
