CPNE Elects New Leadership: Irshad Arif as President, Aijaz Ul Haq as Secretary General; Prominent Leaders Extend Congratulations

On May 31, the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) held its annual elections for office bearers in Karachi. Irshad Arif, the Editor-in-Chief of 92 News, was elected President of CPNE. Meanwhile, Aijaz Ul Haq, the Managing Editor of Express Group, assumed the role of Secretary General. 

Tahir Farooq, Editor-in-Chief of Daily ITTEHAD Media Group and Pakistan Economic Net, was elected unopposed as the Vice President of CPNE for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter. 

President Asif Ali Zardari, along with other prominent figures such as Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, and Culture Attaullah Tarar, have extended their congratulations to the new office bearers. 

President Zardari congratulated the newly elected office bearers. Zardari expressed his best wishes for all newly elected officials, urging them to promote responsible journalism and the development of the journalism sector. He emphasized the importance of media in fostering democracy, morality, and democratic values, and called for efforts to combat fake news and raise public awareness on social issues. Zardari highlighted press freedom as essential for the country’s development, democracy, and accountability.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the newly elected leaders of CPNE praising their commitment to quality journalism and the fight against fake news. PM Sharif expressed hope that they would further elevate journalism standards in the country.

Speaker Sadiq also congratulated the newly elected members of the CPNE. He expressed confidence in their ability to make CPNE a proactive organization dedicated to protecting journalists’ rights. Highlighting the intertwined roles of Parliament and the media in promoting democracy, Sadiq affirmed Parliament’s commitment to enacting legislation that safeguards reporters and journalists, especially those in print media.

Minister Tarar praised the CPNE for its significant role in promoting democracy and maintaining high journalistic standards in Pakistan. He emphasized that freedom of expression is crucial for a robust democracy and acknowledged the government’s commitment to addressing media-related issues. Tarar expressed optimism that the newly elected CPNE officials would fulfill the expectations of the journalism community and contribute to the enhancement of the journalism sector and the welfare of the media industry.
