ISLAMABAD, July 22 2005: The government is all set to launch E-services in all the press clubs of the country for the benefit of print and electronic media. The project was approved by a high-level meeting chair by information technology minister Awais Ahmed Khan Laghari a few months back. A sum of Rs 34.5 million was approved for the project.
Official sources said the project will be launched towards the end of August and approximately 300 press clubs will be inter-connected with Internet services. IT secretary Khalid Saeed will supervise the project. In the first phase, 122 press clubs will be equipped with computers and connected to the Internet and e-mail facilities for instant exchange of information.
More than 150 latest computer sets would be provided to these press clubs along with printers and digital fax software.
In the second phase, press clubs of twin cities of Rawalpindi/ Islamabad and Lahore will be connected through cyber services.
Besides, 11 press information centers/departments and two district press clubs in Azad Kashmir will also be provided these facilities. The number of computers would range from 1 to 10 depending on the size of the press club.
Locations having two or more computers, local area networking will also be provided and all computers will be connected to the Internet.
In order to make full use of this facility, training component has been included in the project for providing onsite training at all press clubs where facilities are provided.
To ensure utilisation of the equipment delivery and sustainability after the life of the project, each press club will enter into a formal agreement with the ministry.
