Family of Murdered Journalist Khalil Jibran Urgently Seeks Relocation

Pakistan Press Foundation

On July 3, the family members of slain journalist Khalil Jibran urgently requested relocation to a safer area following an arson attack on their commercial building in Landi Kotal’s Sultan Khel area. The attack occurred on June 30 night when unidentified individuals set fire to a snooker club adjacent to their home, further endangering the already vulnerable family.

Khalil’s 17-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter have expressed their heightened sense of insecurity following the arson attack. The son, who is an intermediate student, stated that the family is still traumatized by their father’s murder. He added that the arsonists seemed determined to strip them of their sole source of income by targeting the snooker club and had threatened them with “dire consequences” if the club was not shut down immediately.

Khalil’s daughter voiced similar concerns, emphasizing the mental stress the entire family is under, fearing further attacks. She also expressed worries about her education and that of her two sisters, who are now too afraid to leave their house and have not filed a First Information Report (FIR) out of fear.

The family has appealed to both federal and provincial governments for a thorough investigation into the incidents and for foolproof security and adequate compensation for their losses.

District Police Officer Saleem Abbas Kulachi stated that over 12 suspects are part of the ongoing investigation into Khalil Jibran’s murder, but there has been no significant progress. Despite the family not registering an FIR for the arson attack, the police have gathered evidence, including DVR footage and handwritten pamphlets from the site.

Khalil Jibran was killed on June 18 when unidentified individuals intercepted his vehicle, dragged him out, and shot him 19 times near his home in the Mazreena area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Landi Kotal town . He had previously received threats and had faced three prior attacks. Jibran’s body remained at the scene for hours before police transported it to Landi Kotal Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
