On January 19, Naheed Jahangir, a former female journalist and current Assistant Media Manager at Lady Reading Hospital, along with her sisters:  Rani Andaleeb, who is a trainee reporter at TNN,  and Salma Jahangir were assaulted by their maternal cousins in Peshawar. The attack occurred near Kohat Road Chungi as they returned from a family event. The aggressors forcibly removed them from their rickshaws and subjected them to a severe beating, resulting in injuries to the victims. They were taken to Lady Reading Hospital.

Naheed Jahangir recounted the ordeal while speaking to TNN, saying, “We were dragged out of our rickshaw in front of everyone and mercilessly beaten. It seemed like the attackers had planned this thoroughly, as the police officers at the relevant station have shown no cooperation. The attackers had already reached the station and manipulated the situation in their favor.”

The Bhanamari police have registered a case and have detained one individual, identified only as Roman, while continuing to search for other suspects involved. The attack, according to police, stemmed from a previous dispute at the family function, which also saw a pregnant woman from the attackers’ family get hurt.

Naheed Jahangir has called on the Inspector General of Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure a thorough investigation, including a review of CCTV footage to identify all involved.

Muhammad Asim, Media Manager at Lady Reading Hospital, speaking to the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), denounced the attack, labeling it immoral and unacceptable. He stated that the hospital management has approached the police and media welfare organizations to provide support to the victims.

Muhammad Khurshid, Assignment Editor at TNN, said the attack was a personal family matter, but he strongly condemned the inhuman behavior towards the women, who sustained serious injuries and bruises.

The Khyber Union of Journalists condemned the assault, demanding stringent legal consequences for the attackers.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has expressed deep concern over the incident and summoned a report.
