ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday said that media as an important institution of the state needs to play its due role in educating and guiding the people on national issues.

Talking to the owner of a media house who called on him here at the PM House, the Prime Minister said the common man should be kept informed about the prospects of his prosperity and better future.

Appreciating the role of media, the Prime Minister said it could undoubtedly give hope and confidence to the people about a better future. The Prime Minister said the government is doing its best to take all political forces on board in an effort to develop consensus on the issues of national significance.

The process of political reconciliation is an attempt in the same direction so that the people can benefit from the democratic system, he added. He said the provincial harmony thus established resulted in the finalisation of NFC Award which would have far reaching effect in bringing the people together besides ensuring progress and development.

The Prime Minister said despite challenges, the development activities throughout the country are continuing. He mentioned Aghaz-e-Haqooq-Balochistan, internal autonomy for Gilgit-Baltistan, infrastructure development in Punjab and Sindh and economic package for NWFP and Fata have been possible because of democracy.

He said it is only through democracy that all institutions of the state could function independently within the ambit of the constitution thus ensuring good governance, leading toward a moderate and progressive Pakistan.
