KHANEWAL: A man gunned down his wife and two daughters and later set the body of one of the girls on fire in the name of honour at Mauza Rukanwala village, some 25km from here, on Thursday.

Reports said Aslam Chaddhar, a shopkeeper at Bara Meel bus stop on Jhang Road, suspected his wife, Khalida Mai, divorced daughter Sonia Mai, 19, and another daughter Hina Mai, 17, of having loose morals.

On Thursday morning, when Aslam was at his shop, someone told him his wife was talking to a stranger. On receiving the information, Aslam, armed with a pistol and an axe, rushed to his house.

On reaching there, he locked the door from inside and started thrashing his wife and daughters and later opened fire on them, killing all the three on the spot.

But, the brutality didn’t end here. The callous man then torched the body of his younger daughter Hina. He reportedly also injured some of his neighbours who tried to save the women from his wrath.

On being informed of the gory incident, the Saddar police reached the spot, but the accused had, by then, fled away, taking along his two minor sons, a daughter and his mother Jinda Mai on a motorbike.

DPO Kamran Khan, terming the incident tragic, said two raiding parties had been constituted and the accused would soon be captured.

He said some locals saw the accused rushing to his house, carrying pistol and an axe, but no one tried to stop him. He said the police would soon register the case.

land auction: District Coordination Officer Qazi Muhammad Ashfaq on Thursday cancelled auction of the state-owned properties (land) held at the district council hall on May 4.

The DCO told this correspondent on phone that various urban and rural landed properties in the district were auctioned under the aegis of the Punjab Privatisation Board, but the auction committee received prices less than the actual market value.

He said the committee was authorised to cancel auction at any stage without giving any reason. “Now we will invite the bidders again to come up for offering reasonable prices of the 56 rural and urban state properties,” he said.

He said the committee would soon announce new bidding schedule for government properties on a tehsil basis so as to have sufficient time to achieve the targets.
