On July 9, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said that journalists in the province have acted as frontline fighters in the ongoing battle against terrorism. He made this statement while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Video Journalists Association at Governor House Peshawar.
Senior journalist Amjad Aziz Malik moderated the event, which was attended by President of the Peshawar Press Club Muhammad Riaz, Association President Sheikh Ashfaq Hussain, and founding member Rizwan Sheikh. Governor Kundi administered the oath to the new cabinet and praised their democratic election, calling for regular interaction between journalists and the Governor’s office.
Kundi said that journalism, especially video and photo journalism holds global recognition and plays an essential role in society. He acknowledged the critical relationship between the media and political institutions, emphasizing that this connection is both historic and necessary.
The governor noted that while constructive criticism is important, the unchecked spread of fake news must be discouraged. “The importance and role of the media can never be diminished. There is an inseparable bond between media and politicians,” the governor said.
Highlighting the personal risks faced by journalists, Kundi paid tribute to those who have worked in conflict zones and lost their lives in the line of duty. “I salute the courage and contributions of media workers who have stood firm during difficult times. Some even sacrificed their lives for the peace of this province,” he said.
Governor Kundi also promised to raise journalists’ concerns with the Federal Minister for Information and act as their representative at all relevant forums.
