KARACHI, July 19 2005: A regional conference of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) held recently in Taiwan has demanded job security for journalists working in Asia, saying it believes that deteriorating job security conditions in most countries in South Asia threaten press freedom, says a press release.

Journalists in these countries are underpaid and the rising trend of contractual employment and daily wages further threatens press freedom, says a press release issued by the PFUJ, which was represented at the conference by its secretary-general Mazhar Abbas.

Hosted by the IFJ’s Taiwan affiliate, the Association of Taiwan Journalists, and supported by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, the conference was held in Taipei on the subject of ‘Media for Democracy: the Challenge in Asia’.
