Islamabad, July 21 2005: The government on July 20 said that the work on laying alternative Internet fibre optics link between Lahore and Amritsar has been initiated and it would be fully functional by the end of this year.
Talking to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) President Junaid Iqbal Khan said, “The government has given us the permission to lay an Internet link with India that will be used as a backup facility to ensure that the Internet connectivity remains uninterrupted in case of any undersea cable fault.” On June 27, the undersea fibre optics cable had developed a major fault disconnecting Pakistan from rest of the world through Internet.
