On September 22, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar inaugurated the rehabilitated and renovated Radio Pakistan Peshawar building, which was damaged during a mob attack in May 2023. The restoration was completed in five months and 26 days at a cost of Rs 100 million.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures including the former Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Information and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Affairs, Ikhtiar Wali Khan, and Member Provincial Assembly Malik Tariq Awan, among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tarar highlighted the station’s historical significance, noting that Radio Pakistan Peshawar broadcast Pakistan’s independence announcement in Pashto and Urdu on August 14, 1947. He also condemned the destruction and vandalism during the May 2023 attacks and said the federal government remained committed to countering terrorism and supporting peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation Director General Saeed Ahmad Sheikh said transmissions from Peshawar were restored within 26 hours of the attack in May 2023. Tarar also announced plans to reconstruct the Chagai Mountain monument, which was damaged during the May attacks.
