ISLAMABAD- A protest rally was taken out on Monday from Islamabad Press Club to GEO TV building against curbs on media on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.
The demonstration led by president RIUJ, Afzal Butt and secretary general PFUJ, Mazhar Abbas. Senior journalists, lawyers, political workers and civil society members attended the procession.
Those who attended the rally were Hamid Mir, Aroosa Aalam, Kashif Abbasi, Agha Sheerazi, Ansar Abbasi, Fouzia Shahid, Afzal Butt, C.R Shamsi and others.
They were wielding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against restrictions on media and abuse of human rights in the country.
The participants of the rally chanted slogans against the government for gagging the press. Demonstration concluded outside GEO TV office.
Addressing the rally senior journalist Dr Shahid Masood thanked journalists and members of civil society to join struggle for restoration of GEO TV transmission. “The way the struggle is being waged, it will not go waste and will meet success”, he hoped.
Hamid Mir alleged government was threatening them against waging struggle for the cause of freedom of press. “ But we cannot be deterred.
We will continue our struggle till the restoration of freedom of press and independent judiciary”, he announced, adding that the human rights were being trampled ruthlessly by the rulers in Pakistan.
