ISLAMABAD, August 26 2006: A freelance journalist on Friday (Aug 25) filed a constitutional petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the recently introduced Women’s Protection Bill 2006 and seeking stay order against any further debate on the bill in the National Assembly.

Shahid Orakzai filed the petition under article 184(3) of the Constitution, maintaining that the proposed amendments to the Hudood Laws were not in accordance with true Islamic injunctions. Orakzai also annexed a stay application alongside the main petition, seeking stay against the conduct of any further debate on ‘Criminal Law Amendment (Protection of Women) Bill 2006’, arguing that mass nationwide campaigns both in favour of and against the bill could lead to a law and order problem in the country. mohammad kamran
