On December 13, the Sindh Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners raised concern over the failure to submit a police report in the murder case of journalist Tufail Haiderani Rind and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. During a meeting chaired by Aijaz Ahmed Memon, the commission reviewed recent cases involving journalists, expressing satisfaction with police reports in several cases but noting no progress in the Tufail Rind case.
The commission also reiterated directives requiring media houses to provide safety training, life insurance, journalist data, and compliance with minimum wage laws, noting poor cooperation from media organizations. It decided to engage bodies such as CPNE and APNS to help enforce these requirements.
Members were briefed on proposed legal amendments to strengthen the commission’s authority, including disciplinary powers, increased women’s representation, inclusion of an Association of Electronic Media News Editors and Directors (AEMEND) representative, and longer terms for non-official members.
Tufail Rind, 34, and his eight-year-old niece were killed in a shooting on October 8 in Mirpur Mathelo while he was taking children to school. Police reported that assailants opened fire on his car and fled on a motorcycle.
