Rs 300,000 compensation for Sangi’s family; protest rallies held across interior Sindh

LARKANA, June 02 2006: The Sindh Home Department on June 01 appointed the District and Sessions Judge Larkana Anwar Alam Baloch as inquiry officer to probe into the killing of photojournalist Munir Sangi, while performing his professional duties last week, and fix responsibility in this regard.

Sindh Home Minister Abdul Rauf Siddiqui also announced Rs 300,000 compensation for the family of the deceased. The DPO Kamber-Shahdadkot Shrjeel Kharal is already probing into the matter on the directives of RPO Sukkur Akbar Arain. Meanwhile, journalists of Larkana took out a protest rally against the murder Sangi. The protesters, wearing black armbands and carrying black flags marched through various roads and gathered in front of the district Council Hall.

Activists of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, the Sindh National Front, the PPP-SB, the PPPP, the JUI-F, the Sindh Employees Alliance, the Watan Dost Mazdoor Federation, the Pharma Association Larkana, NGOs, political, social and trade organizations also joined the rally and expressed solidarity with the journalist community. Our Sukkur correspondent adds: Hundreds of the journalists and activists of various political parties and social organizations staged protest demonstration in Sukkur, Rohri, Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo, Daharki, Ubauro, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Thul, and Kandhkot on June 01 to protest the killing of Sangi.

Hundreds of people participated in the Sukkur rally, who also observed a sit-in for an hour in front of the press club. They demanded protection to the journalists especially in the interior Sindh. Addressing a rally in Ghotki, the journalist community leaders strongly condemned the killing of Sangi and demanded of the government to arrest the culprits and pay compensation to his relatives.

Our Thatta correspondent adds: To condole the death of Sangi, a meeting was held here on June 01, which was attended by journalists and members of various political and social organizations. Addressing the participants, Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Uqaili, Muhammad Usman Memon, Yar Muhammad Jalalani and Mahboob Brohi demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. They also demanded that journalists should be provided security, especially while they worked in rural areas.

The Sindh Paramedical Staff Welfare Association also staged a separate demonstration in front of Thatta Civil Hospital to protest Sangi’s killing. The participants, led by Mehmood Bamboo, Qasim Jokhio and Muhammad Ashraf Khushk, demanded due punishment to the culprits. Meanwhile, members, office-bearers of All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA) also condemned Sangi’s death and demanded of the government to apprehend the culprits.

Our Peshawar correspondent adds: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a New York-based organization, has condemned the killing of Munir Ahmed Sangi. “We mourn the death of our colleague, Munir Ahmed Sangi, who was killed while performing his duties,” said CPJ Executive Director, Ann Cooper in a statement sent to The News on June 01.
