On May 19, the Karachi Press Club (KPC) condemned alleged police misconduct involving journalists during the court appearance of Anmol, alias Pinky. The KPC warned that any attempts to suppress press freedom would not be tolerated, calling for action against those responsible.
In a statement, KPC President Fazil Jamili, Secretary Aslam Khan, and members of its governing body expressed regret over the treatment of journalists during Anmol’s court appearance. They described the actions as deeply regrettable, unlawful and condemnable, highlighting that journalists were pushed, obstructed from coverage, and threatened with serious consequences. Allegedly, police told journalists that if the news got out, they would face repercussions, asserting authority over the premises.
Such remarks were labelled by the KPC as an abuse of authority and a direct attack on freedom of expression. The club emphasised the role of the police to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights, rather than harass journalists or obstruct their professional duties. Concerns were also raised regarding threats by Inspector Sajida Nazir to register cases against journalists, with the KPC warning that any denial of journalists’ rights to report freely would lead to protests by media bodies.
The KPC urged the Sindh and Karachi police chiefs and other senior authorities to take notice of the incident, conduct a transparent inquiry into the incident and take strict departmental action against the officials involved. The KPC reaffirmed its commitment to the dignity, safety, and freedom of journalists, pledging to continue advocating for media rights at all forums.
On May 19, police barred journalists from entering the premises of the Jail Complex during the hearing of Anmol Pinky, citing strict instructions from senior officers. Anmol, who was arrested earlier this month from her Garden apartment, faces charges related to narcotics possession and an unlicensed weapon. Police at the venue stated that no journalists were to be allowed entry, denying permission for media coverage of the case.
