LAHORE: Kinnaird College for Women’s Department of Media Studies on Tuesday organised its 4th Mock Court Trial on Freedom of Expression. Supreme Court senior advocate Aitzaz Ahsan, senior journalist Arif Nizami, LUMS Law Department Dean Dr Ali Qazalbash, Mamoona Bhatti and Jawad Hassan were the judges.
The chief guest at the occasion was Professor Dr Mugheesuddin Sheikh, dean of faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences at the University of the Punjab. During the proceedings students acted as counsel for claimants, respondents and witnesses in the eight-session trial on freedom of expression.
After hearing the arguments of the counsels, the judges announced their verdict. Arif Nizami said the there was a need for establishing a press council in Pakistan. The judges, the chief guest, Kinnaird College for Women Principal Dr Bernadette Louise Dean praised the university’s Media Studies department and its dean Shazia Saeed for conducting a successful event. This mock trial was held in to understand the applications of the provisions of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, 2002 (PEMRA) and other acts that form a major part of media law course being taught at the university by Jawad Hassan.
