KPC golden jubilee celebrations begin

The celebration of the Karachi Press Club’s (KPC) Golden Jubilee started on Tuesday and will continue till the end of the year.

Secretary, KPC, Imitaz Khan Faran, during a press briefing on Tuesday, declared open the celebrations, entitled, “On the Path of Democracy and Press Freedom.” The briefing was also attended by KPC President Najeeb Ahmed, and other governing body members and office-bearers.

Prince Karim Aga Khan is the Patron-in-Chief of the KPC, Faran told The News, and the KPC management is trying to get in touch with him in order to invite him as a special guest for the golden jubilee celebrations. The KPC was formed in the year 1958 in the month of December; KPC has the credit of being the first press club of the country. I.H. Burney was the first President of the KPC. The first election was held in the same year, 1958.

Giving the schedule for the Golden Jubilee celebrations, which will last eight months, Faran said that a Mehfil-e-Mushaira will be held on April 19 in which famous poets of the country will participate, followed by a Shaam-e-Ghazal on April 22. Legendary singer Munni Begum will be the chief guest. In the month of May, he said, an international Mushaira will also be held besides other programmes. The KPC also plans to host the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, in a ‘Meet the Press’ programme. A photo exhibition of important streets, events and historical places will also be organised in collaboration with the member photographers.

Faran also announced the holding of a Jashn-e-Latif Programme in which Sindh’s singers and other intellectuals will be called. He added that seminars and conferences will also be arranged.
