‘KU teacher attacked Rangers first’

KARACHI – Sindh Rangers spokesman on Tuesday accused Dr Riaz Ahmed, an associate professor of the Department of Applied Chemistry at Karachi University (KU) who was allegedly tortured by the ranger personnel on Monday, of beating up rangers officials posted at the Silver Jubilee gate without ant provocation.

Captain Fazal Mahmood told the newsmen that Dr Riaz Ahmed in his car wanted to leave KU through the Silver Jubilee gate on Monday evening and the ranger personnel posted at place intercepted him and requested to allow the checking of his vehicle, he not only declined to comply with their demand but also hit his car against the barricade. Later, he got out of the car and abusing and beating up the ranger officials. Resultantly, a soldier Anwarul Haq got his finger fractured.

On the other hand, in an emergent general body meeting, the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) has demanded of the authorities concerned to order withdrawal of Sindh Rangers from educational institutions and hostels and arrange for alternate security system there. The meeting was held on Tuesday at the KU Arts Auditorium to condemn the incident of manhandling of Dr Riaz Ahmed at the hands of some rangers personnel. The meeting demanded of the Rangers high-ups to remove their personnel from educational institutions, who were involved in the incident. The meeting also announced to observe black day on April 4 at all universities in the country in protest against the incident.
