KARACHI, August 31 2006: her own family members killed a married woman in her forties who had come over from Larkana to avoid the taunts of the people of her native town. The murderers, who managed to make good their escape, had not been apprehended till the filing of this report. She was being accused of having illicit relations with someone in her hometown, Larkana.
Dedar Jatoi, her elder brother, Ghulam Ali, her nephew and Ali Murad, her relative in her house within the Sohrab Goth police jurisdiction, murdered Marvi, wife of Ali Hasan, and mother of eight children, on July 22. According to Asghar, the eldest son of the deceased, after stories of his mother’s illicit relations with Abdullah Banglani began to circulate, the family shifted to Karachi, as it was the only option left for them to breathe an air of relative safety since there was the danger of violent reaction from the people.
He further said that they shifted to a house of their maternal uncles, Mehar Gul and Ali Sher. Asghar, who made his statement at the police station, said that some three months ago, several disputes had erupted between his parents. He also informed the police that instead of any settlement, both had decided to start living separately and “our mother brought all of us to a new house, which we rented in the same locality”.
Asghar, 23, who worked as a labourer in the construction field, said that one of his maternal uncles, Dedar Jatoi, who was released from a district jail just a couple of months ago, along with two other close relatives, came to Karachi and on the said day they barged into the house at around 3am. Recalling the gory incident, Asghar said, “I was caught by two of my relatives and Dedar axed my mother right in my presence. I was totally helpless at that moment. My younger brother, Liaquat, was not at home and the rest of my siblings were too young to make any effort”.
Asghar said, “the three assailants left the house after making violent attacks on my mother and as they were fleeing, we saw our father, along with his brother, standing beside the gate”. Voicing disappointment, he said, “rather than helping us, they also disappeared in the darkness, leaving us behind to handle the tragedy on our own. He also said that hearing loud voices from our compound, some of the area people gathered in our house and a few of them rushed us to the hospital in an attempt to save the life of our mother”.
He also stated that all the efforts remained fruitless as she was brutally attacked by her brother and after completing all the legal procedure at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, “they handed over the body to us, which was later buried in a local graveyard nearby”. Area Police have registered a case against the accused Dedar Jatoi and Ali Hasan with brothers and cousins of deceased Marvi, were also nominated by Asghar and FIR number 365/2006 has been lodged against all of them.
Inspector and the Investigation Officer Jahan Khan Niazi told this correspondent that the whole family belongs to Jatoi cast and police are sure that sooner or later they will get their hands on the accused. He also said that Marvi’s husband and his brothers were nominated in the case by his own son and although there was no other eyewitness to their involvement suspicions had arisen as they were missing from the scene. Niazi said that Dedar’s character would be highlighted more from his past and especially from his jail record.
