KARACHI: Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Ms Sharmila Farooqui Sunday said media has a large role in forming a tolerant and democratic society, so a stable democracy is pre-requisite for a free media and we expect that our media will work for promotion of democracy in the country.
She expressed these views while speaking as chief guest at a get-together ceremony organised by Mass Communication Department of Federal Urdu University at the Arts Council, Karachi.
She said media has always been a unique and sophisticated ground to play on when it is about image building. It is good to be truthful but when we talk about national interest, it is obligatory to be noiseless on certain instances so that issues can be resolved without being influenced, she elaborated.
‘The media is an arrearage of professionalism in the nascent Pakistan media and the media organisations should work hard for playing a role in promotion of active citizenship. The efforts should be focused to support national image rather than highlighting the most harmful and depressing news,’ she said.
The advisor said the world has become a global village and this scenario attaches more importance to the media and to the teachings of mass communication. The electronic and print media hold sway over the entire globe and have become effective machines of education in the society, she added.
A bona fide journalist always sticks to the truth, remains loyal to the citizens and knows the importance of verification of events, she observed. She urged the students of Mass Communication, entering into practical life, to adhere to the basic ethics of journalism.
