On February 6, the National Assembly of Pakistan passed two major media-related amendment bills and one concerning newspaper employees during a brief sitting. The legislation was introduced by Federal Minister for the Board of Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh.
The approved media legislation included the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Associated Press of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2025. According to the statement of objects and reasons, the Associated Press of Pakistan Corporation operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and functions as the state news agency under the APP Ordinance 2002.
The Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Bill 2025 was also passed, updating provisions relating to employment conditions in the print media sector.
The assembly was adjourned after Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) MNA Aliya Kamran highlighted the lack of the required number of members present. Following a headcount ordered by the Speaker, it was confirmed that the quorum was not met, leading to the suspension of the session.
