The National Assembly on December 18 passed the National Forensic Agency Bill 2024. This legislation, which aims to transform the National Forensic Agency (NFA) into an independent body, was introduced by the Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, and already received the Senate’s approval.
During the deliberations, a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Shazia Marri, who also recognized its importance, expressed concerns about certain sections of the bill such as the proposed penalties for government officials who misuse their powers, arguing that the punishments were too lenient and suggesting the fine should be raised to at least Rs500,000.
Marri also raised concerns about inconsistencies in the bill where “Prime Minister” was used in one part and not in another.
Responding to the objections, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar emphasized the importance of passing the bill to advance forensic science techniques. “Forensic science facilities will be based in Islamabad, and any minor issues can be addressed in the future,” Tarar said.
Tarar proposed Marri withdraw her objectives as amendments could be revisited later. She agreed. The National Forensic Agency Bill 2024 was passed.
