The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) warned the public that unsecured public Wi-Fi networks can expose personal information, passwords and online accounts to cybercriminals.
In its advisory, the agency said criminals may create fake Wi-Fi networks using names similar to those of well-known businesses or local shops to trick users into connecting. It urged people to verify network names with staff at hotels, cafes and other public venues before connecting their mobile phones, laptops and other devices.
The NCCIA advised users against accessing bank accounts, transferring money or making online purchases through unverified public Wi-Fi, warning that hackers could steal passwords and sensitive financial information. It recommended using mobile data for financial transactions and disconnecting immediately from suspicious networks.
Speaking at a press conference, NCCIA Lahore Zone Additional Director SP Atif Ameer said the agency was using artificial intelligence and collaborating with relevant institutions to trace and prosecute cybercriminals.
The NCCIA said the advisory aimed to raise public awareness and help people protect their personal and financial information from cybercrime risks associated with unsecured public Wi-Fi.
