On May 26, Federal Minister of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal stated that the government has no intention of suppressing the media. He asserted that there have been no efforts from their side to stifle press freedom.

In an interview with a private news channel, Iqbal acknowledged the significant benefits of social media platforms but also highlighted their potential dangers, particularly in spreading misinformation that can lead to societal unrest. He emphasized the government’s objective to mitigate these risks and promote responsible use of social media.

“We are not inclined towards suffocating the media,” Iqbal said. “Our goal is to ensure that social media is used responsibly to prevent the spread of chaos-inducing misinformation.”

Iqbal stressed the importance of engaging with stakeholders to develop laws that address the challenges posed by social media. “Consultation with relevant parties is crucial in formulating effective legislation,” he added. “Such laws must be in the interest of all to safeguard the country from the risks associated with misinformation.”
