KHALIL-UR-REHMAN RIJAI
KARACHI: This refers to a news item of January 28, 2011, informing that MNAs of the opposition and Treasury benches unanimously condemned the rampant nudity and vulgarity displayed on the private TV channels. I think the clips of the fashion shows, Indian movies/songs, film awards distribution shows, advertisements are not reflecting the adherent culture of our masses but on the contrary, contributing to the degeneration of the moral and cultural values of the society.
Once upon time PTV dramas were exemplary on the basis of subject, story, direction, acting and production. For now they are merely glamour-studded, characters are dressed in the western way, with shameless romantic expressions, betrayal of spouses etc, absolutely copying Indian dramas and films. It looks that as if love is the only problem of society and we have no evils like illiteracy, hunger, poverty, injustices, etc.
Such manifestations on TV are absolutely at odds with our religion or any religion being practiced in this part of world and our social values. On the other hand, such display on TV channels solidifies the concepts of religious extremists, who are against educating women, economic emancipation, promoting fine arts and any cultural activity.
The private TV channels have to respect the sentiments of the majority of the religiously moderate masses, create their own norms according to the social values and adhere to them by self-censorship. Please make your entertaining programmes and advertisements, which members of a family can view jointly.
