Parliamentary body on EC formed

ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza has appointed a 12-member Parliamentary Committee on Election Commission (EC). It’s a move towards implementation of 10-point agenda for having an independent election commission.

The 12-member committee includes Islamuddin Sheikh (PPP), Haji Muhammad Adeel (ANP), Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri (JUI-F), Haroon Akhtar Khan (PML-Q), Syed khursheed Ahmed Shah (PPP), Arif Aziz Sheikh (PPP), Dr Farooq Sattar (MQM), Munir Khan Orakzai (Fata) Khawaja Muhammad Asif (PML-N), Lt General (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch (PML-N), Tehmina Daultana (PML-N) and Amir Muqam (PML-Q).

As per the 18th Amendment, the 12 member committee to be formed for the independent election commission and out of eight members from the National Assembly and four members from the Senate with equal representation from both sides of the aisle.

It may be recalled that the election commission has not been completed since the last elections held in 2008 and only the chief election commissioner is in the office while one judge from each province is due to be appointed.
