On March 9, Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting, Daniyal Chaudhry, detailed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) enforcement mechanism for managing violations by television channels. According to Chaudhry, PEMRA operates under a three-tier system designed to uphold a strict code of conduct within the media sector.
During the Question Hour of the National Assembly, Chaudhry elucidated that the initial regulatory step involves issuing show-cause notices to broadcasters reported for non-compliance. If responses to these notices are unsatisfactory, PEMRA has the authority to impose fines.
He highlighted recent instances where financial penalties were enforced on several channels for breaching regulatory standards.
Furthermore, Chaudhry explained that PEMRA could also issue directives for compliance and preventing further infractions. He emphasised the systematic and structured nature of the regulatory enforcement including based on public complaints. Upon receiving a complaint, PEMRA investigates and if a violation is confirmed, decisive actions are taken to rectify the issue.
The parliamentary secretary reassured that PEMRA’s approach is comprehensive, involving first, second, and third levels of response to ensure media organizations consistently adhere to professional and legal expectations.
