ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has dismissed an application that had been filed by a company of Geo TV network in which Geo had sought legal action against the Pemra chairman and PTV MD for disobeying orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, under which Pemra was required to ensure that throughout Pakistan, all cricket World Cup 2011 matches on cable network are broadcast only on Geo Super.

Earlier on January 24, 2011, the Supreme Court had directed Pemra to ensure, in letter and spirit, that World Cup matches, which are due to commence on February 19, 2011, are broadcast on Geo Super only.

While written orders are still awaited, through the oral order announced in the open court, the IHC dismissed Geo’s application on the grounds that Pemra shall comply with the Supreme CourtÂ’s directive in letter and spirit by ensuring that World Cup matches are broadcast on cable TV network only on Geo Super and not on any other channel.

Also in its order, Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi decided not to pass any order with regard to the validity of the payment demand that had been raised by Pemra against the company that carries Geo Super because the said demand had already been challenged by Geo before the Sindh High Court which had graciously restrained Pemra from taking any coercive action relating to that demand until the vires of the rules under which the said demand had been raised could be determined by Honourable Sindh High Court.
