Peshawar Workshop Empowers Journalists to Fight Fake News in the Digital Age

On May 21, the Press Information Department (PID) Peshawar, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, concluded a two-day workshop aimed at empowering journalists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to combat the growing threat of fake news and disinformation in the digital age.

The workshop, “Truth in the Digital Era: strategies for Countering Fake News in Pakistan,” brought together journalists, academics, and media experts to discuss the challenges posed by the rapid spread of false information on social and digital media platforms.

During the interactive sessions, participants engaged in brainstorming and discussions on strategies to address the issue of negative propaganda and misinformation. Peshawar Press Club (PPC) President Arshad Aziz Malik emphasized the importance of verifying news stories before sharing them with the public, highlighting the responsibility of journalists to uphold the integrity of their profession.

Senior journalist Maeraj Farooq Farooq shed light on the prevailing trend of sensationalism in the media industry, driven by the pursuit of monetary gains. The speakers highlighted the detrimental impact of fake news and disinformation on society’s moral and social fabric.

Participants expressed their appreciation for PID Peshawar’s initiative in organizing the workshop and called for more such events to be held in Peshawar and other divisional headquarters of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They emphasized the importance of continuous education and information sharing for young media professionals to navigate the challenges of the digital landscape effectively.
