ISLAMABAD: Fauzia Gilani, wife of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, was administered oath as the chief guide of Pakistan Girl Guides Association here on Monday.

National Commissioner of Pakistan Girl Guides Association Farhana Azim administered the oath to Ms Gilani.

The ceremony marked the centenary celebration of the girl guides movement all over the world under the theme of “100 years of changing lives”.

Speaking on the occasion, honorary president of PGGA Nafisa Shah said it was possibly the largest and most extensive association of young women and girls with a membership of over 120,000 from all parts of the country.

“Guiding is a great nation-building exercise, and as we face a nasty war on our western fronts, the association with membership in all provinces and areas can forge unity in our ranks,” she said.

Ms Farhana Azim said the association was in the process of developing its first ever national camp site to provide camping facilities to 1,500 guides.

She thanked the ministry of education for providing funds for the project on the directive of the prime minister.

The PGGA is the largest voluntary organisation working for the welfare of young women in Pakistan and has a membership of 120,726.

The association runs programmes for girls between the ages of six to 21 years focusing on empowerment of the girls, community service and emergency preparedness.
