KARACHI: A police constable of the anti-violent crime cell allegedly shot dead his pregnant wife at their Manzoor Colony residence on Sunday, police said.
They arrested the victim’s husband, Jamshed, and seized his official 9mm pistol after the incident.
Earlier, he had reported to the police that his wife, Fauzia Ambreen, had committed suicide after a quarrel with him. But initial findings of a medico-legal examination of the body coupled with the evidences gathered from the crime-scene raised suspicions, the police added.
The investigators found two spent bullet casings at the crime-scene. “In a suicide case a singe bullet is fired,” said Inspector Haider Ali Zaidi, the SHO of the Baloch Colony police station.
“Later, the father and brothers of the deceased approached the police to tell them that Fauzia was a left-hander while the bullet had hit the right side of her head.”
The initial autopsy report conducted at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre suggested that the bullet that killed the victim was fired from a distance of at least one foot. The finding strengthened the investigators’ suspicions, the police said.
“Under these findings we detained the victim’s husband and questioned him,” Inspector Zaidi said, adding that after a brief grilling, the suspect confessed to having killed his wife. “He told the police that he shot dead his 30-year-old wife Fauzia Ambreen, who was a four-month pregnant.”
The SHO said that Jamshed told the police that he had an illicit relationship with another woman, which was in the knowledge of his wife. “The couple off and on exchanged hot words over the issue.”
On Sunday morning, he said, they got involved in an altercation over the matter, which turned him extremely angry. He said he pulled out his 9mm official pistol in a fit of anger and shot dead his wife.
They married five years ago and had two children — a three-and-a-half-year-old son and one-year-old daughter.
The police registered a case (FIR 94/2010) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code against Jamshed.
