President Zardari and PM Sharif Highlight Information Integrity as Antidote to Fake News

On the International Day for Universal Access to Information, President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in their separate addresses, highlighted the role of accurate information in combating misinformation and fake news, particularly in the digital age. President Zardari called on citizens to avoid sharing unverified content, stressing the importance of accurate reporting for democratic stability. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif encouraged collaboration among government institutions, civil society, media, and technology platforms to foster a transparent, knowledge-based society.

Further, Prime Minister Sharif underscored the government’s commitment to guaranteeing equal information access to all societal segments, including women, youth, and marginalized groups. He noted that such efforts strengthen governance, foster inclusion, and build public trust.

Chairman Senate Gilani pointed out that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the right to seek and obtain information, which is crucial for an informed society that upholds transparency, development, and justice. He emphasized the increased responsibility of journalists and media organizations in delivering timely and accurate information, cautioning against the dangers of misinformation and fake news.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif remarked on the critical role of the Information Department in bridging communication between the government and the public. She noted that the Punjab government has taken significant steps to ensure uninterrupted access to information by digitizing its information system, aiming to enhance transparency and public trust in decision-making processes.

Collectively, these leaders urged relevant institutions to enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of the access-to-information system, ensuring that citizens benefit from reliable and timely information. They highlighted the necessity of media professionalism in building an informed, confident, and aware society through accurate reporting.
