PTA Blocks Accounts, Removed Content in Crackdown on Explicit Content

According to a report submitted to the Peshawar High Court, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 113,133 TikTok accounts since 2020 to regulate and remove obscene and blasphemous content on social media platforms.  The PTA report revealed that since 2020, TikTok has seen over 114,015 uploads of explicit videos in Pakistan. Additionally, the PTA blocked 2,463 posts featuring blasphemous material.

The report also highlighted that 25,267 instances of explicit content were uploaded on TikTok in 2023. This led to the blocking of 24,800 accounts that posted or shared the content. The PTA’s efforts extend across other social media platforms, resulting in 1,389,181 cases of reported obscene content across platforms, of which 1,303,578 links were blocked.

A breakdown of the PTA’s actions across these platforms includes blocking 147,579 links on Facebook, 22,357 on Instagram, 125,600 on TikTok, 53,162 on YouTube, and 53,842 on X.  The PTA has emphasized ongoing collaboration with social media companies to mitigate the spread of inappropriate and blasphemous material on their platforms.
