On February 28,  the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) called for responsible use of social media and digital platforms by its citizens in light of the prevailing sensitive national situation.

In a public advisory, the authority urged citizens not to share, disseminate, forward or upload any “unverified, inflammatory, or misleading information or content” which could harm (directly or indirectly) the national interest, public order or state institutions.

The authority emphasised the importance of sharing only authentic content “based upon official sources” and to refrain from spreading rumours or fake news.

The PTA’s appeal came amid border clashes between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime.

The PTA said that sharing fake news could result in legal actions as per applicable laws. The authority underscored the need for caution, maturity, and a robust sense of national responsibility.
