PTA Unveils WLAN Framework 2024, Opens New Frequency Bands for Wireless Expansion

Pakistan Press Foundation

On September 24, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) officially published the “Framework for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) 2024,” following extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders. The framework sets out specific unlicensed frequency bands for WLAN operations nationwide, including the 2.4 Gigahertz (GHz), 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands.

PTA announced the 6 GHz spectrum band for unlicensed operation of Radio Local Area Networks (RLAN) in Pakistan in May 2024. According to a PTA news release, the introduction of this framework emphasizes the authority’s commitment to creating a regulatory environment that ensures the safe and efficient use of unlicensed spectrum.

The framework is expected to benefit both importers and local manufacturers of WLAN equipment by providing clear technical guidelines and facilitating the import and distribution of compliant devices within Pakistan. Consumers are also set to experience improved wireless connectivity in homes, offices, and public spaces, boosting digital access and the adoption of new technologies.

The framework provides detailed regulatory guidelines for WLAN operations to ensure compliance with technical and operational standards. It specifies that any terminal equipment using unlicensed radio frequency data services through WLAN will require approval under the Type Approval Technical Standard Regulations, 2021, including any future amendments.

The PTA may review and update the framework to accommodate evolving trends, technologies, and future requirements. WLAN frequency bands will be shared with other non-WLAN services and applications. In the event of interference with primary users, secondary users must immediately implement measures to resolve the interference.
