Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi issued calls for collective and coordinated action against hate speech and the promotion of tolerance across diverse societal segments. Their statements were made to mark the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed the importance of a coordinated strategy to confront prejudice and incitement, particularly highlighting the role of young people in curbing hate content and misinformation on social media platforms. She emphasised the government’s dedication to eradicating hatred, prejudice, and intolerance, underscoring the significance of peace, love, and brotherhood, especially during the holy month of Muharram. Maryam Nawaz highlighted the challenges posed by the swift spread of hate speech through digital platforms, noting its potential to undermine human rights, instigate violence, and deepen societal divisions.

In her address, she urged the rejection of all forms of hateful narratives and the fostering of a culture centered on tolerance and mutual respect. The chief minister pinpointed Islamophobia as one of the most perilous manifestations of hate-driven ideologies. She said that no one should be allowed to spread such hate under the guise of freedom of expression.

Similarly, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi underscored the need for joint efforts to counteract hate speech and bolster tolerance, warning of the threats posed by divisive narratives and misinformation to social harmony and national unity. He praised Pakistan’s cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity as one of the nation’s prime strengths, advocating for protection through mutual respect, inclusion, and equal opportunities.

Governor Kundi reiterated that the Constitution guarantees equal rights without discrimination and stressed the importance of these principles in establishing a peaceful and inclusive society. He called for the responsible use of digital platforms, highlighting their role in strengthening national unity and raising public awareness, especially among the youth.

He called upon elected representatives, media organisations, educators, religious scholars, and civil society to play active roles in discouraging divisive rhetoric and promoting understanding and dialogue.
