KARACHI: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) said on Wednesday a press release issued by the Khushnood Ali Khan group claiming the issuance of a court stay order against CPNE President Jamil Athar and Secretary General Ilyas Shakir turned out to false and fabricated.

The CPNE said in a press release that the Khushnood Ali Khan group had issued the press release, in which it was claimed that Karachi South’s senior civil judge, Iqbal Hussain Matilo, had restrained Jameel Athar, Ilyas Shakir, Qazi Asad Abid, Mushtaq Qureshi and Javed Mehar Shamsi from using the CPNE’s name and issued notices to them for February 9.

However, when CPNE Secretary General Ilyas Shakir and Mukhtar Aqil, CPNE Sindh’s president, appeared before the court, they were told that the court had neither summoned them nor issued any interim stay order against them.

The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors said that the press release issued by the Khushnood Ali Khan group was false and fabricated as neither any interim order was issued by the court against the the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors president and the secretary general nor notices were issued against them.

Meanwhile, CPNE counsel Kaleemul Hasan Siddiqui filed an application with the court, requesting contempt-of-court action against persons who got false news regarding the court’s stay order published. The court issued notices to the respondents and ordered them to file their reply on February 12.
