Karachi: As many as 44 women and 17 men fell prey to Karo-Kari, (“honour” killing) in four districts of Sindh province during the last six months, claims a report about the trend and incidence of Karo-Kari.
The report, which has been submitted to Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza, deals with Karo-Kari in Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur and Naushero Feroze, and has been compiled by Karo-Kari complaint cells established by the Sindh police. According to the Sindh home department, the Sindh police, in collaboration with United Nations Development Fund (UNDP), had started a project under which these Karo-Kari complaint cells which were established in the four districts. Mirza, however, ordered the police to form Karo-Kari complaint cells in all districts of Sindh so as to halt the killing of innocent people.
He said that the priorities of the government include maintaining law and order, provision of equal gender rights and ending crimes against women, which included domestic violence and Karo-Kari. He instructed the police to perform their duties efficiently in order to counter these heinous crimes.
As per the police report submitted to the minister, 47 suspects were arrested during the past six months, whereas the total number of suspects booked in Karo-Kari cases in the four districts was 133. Moreover, from May 2009 to January 2010, 12 women and three men were killed under Karo-Kari in Sukkur, while 13 cases were registered in different police stations of Sukkur.
In Ghotki, 21 women and six men were killed, while 25 FIRs were lodged. In Khairpur, five women and five men were killed and nine cases registered. In Naushehro Feroze, six women and three men were killed and six cases were registered.
The report further said that the police apprehended eight out of 29 booked accused from Sukkur. In Ghotki, 27 accused were arrested from 65 nominated culprits. Seven accused were held from Khairpur, while 20 accused had been nominated. Five suspects were also arrested in Naushehro Feroz out of the 19 nominated in Karo-Kari cases.
