ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Taluka Nazim Kunri, Mirpur Khas to appear before the court on October 17 for replying to allegations levelled against him by a rape victim, Nadira Perveen. Taking suo moto notice of a news item published in TheNation on October 9 based on the sufferings of Nadira, a two-member bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohamed Chaudhry and Justice Mohammed Nawaz Abbasi also instructed Advocate General Sindh, Anwar Mansoor, to ask Sindh police chief for ensuring a fair and expeditious probe into the charges against Taluka Nazim, Memon Jam, his nephew Iqbal and others.
Appearing before the apex court along with her three daughters, Nadira Perveen narrated her miseries and sought protection besides begging for a legal action against the culprits.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry also ordered for provision of accommodation to Nadira and her three daughters Warda 16, Saman 13 and Toheed, 8 at a shelter home in H-8. In case of any security concern, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry told Nadira that she could approach SSP, Islamabad. Earlier, Nadira submitted before the bench that her agony began when she opposed Memon Jam, the present Taluka Nazim Kunri, Mirpur Khas, in the local government elections last year. The victim said Memon Jam has turned inimical towards her after succeeding in elections and his nephew and others raped her in February this year. She said the incident took place when local police on behest of Memon Jam sent her husband and son to jail.
“When I approached Kunri police for action against the highhandedness, I was told to go to Taluka Nazim along with my daughters”, Nadira told the bench. She also told the court about her journey to Islamabad along with her daughters where she is staying in a hotel to escape the wrath of Nazim and saving her daughters from the reach of culprits who not only raped her but also took away all the valuables from her house. Nadira further complained that neither she has any resources to support her living nor she and her daughters were secure as living in a hotel in sector G-7. After listening to her prayer, the apex court directed the respondent Nazim to appear before the bench on October 17 and ordered Deputy Attorney General for arrangements for her accommodation and security.
AG Sindh Anwar Mansoor assured the bench that he would personally talk to Inspector General Police, (IGP) Sindh to probe the facts of the matter till next date. The hearing was adjourned till October 17.
