SUKKUR, August 25 2006: Senator Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro has strongly criticised the bill presented in the National Assembly to amend the Hudood Ordinance and said the government is trying to amend the ordinance according to its wishes in the name of women’s rights. He observed this while talking to newsmen in village Abad Lakha near here on Thursday (Aug 24) after presiding over a meeting of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.

He challenged the prime minister to have a debate on the issue with him on television. He said those who do not even know the “basics” of Islam were declaring religious clerics wrong over the Hudood Ordinance. The government was trying to push the country towards “immodesty” through making such amendments to the ordinance, he said, remarking that “obscenity” would get constitutional cover through the amendment bill. He called for observing a protest day on Friday (Aug 25) against the government.
